In this Instructor Course you will learn to
· Manage a safe climbing experience for youth members
· Apply facilitation skills to improve teamwork
· Support participants throughout their climbing experience
· Become proficient in all the Climbing Events and Elements
· Further develop your own self-confidence and self-awareness.
Climbing Instructor Course Progression: On Friday evening, meet at the Camp Pigott COPE Course at 6:00 PM. we will cover general information, learning theory and knots and equipment. On Saturday, we will cover basic climbing instruction, anchors, belaying, rappelling, rescues, emergencies, documentation, leadership and next steps. On Sunday we will practice everything that has been learned at Mt. Erie, near Anacortes, WA. With director permission, experienced rock climbers who attend the COPE Instructor course weekend may attend the Sunday portion of the Climbing Instructor course at Mt. Erie, and test through for the climbing instructor endorsement.
What to Bring: Your own basic camping kit plus 10 Essentials, including raingear and comfortable clothes to be outdoors for the entire weekend. You will sleep in camp shelters, so a tent is not necessary. Check the weather prior to coming to camp to ensure you are prepared.
This course can be used towards BSA COPE & Climbing Instructor Certification. Requirements for certification:
· Current BSA membership
· Demonstrate instructor proficiency
· Show high levels of physical fitness, dependability and good judgment
· Complete the COPE/Climbing Instructor Course
· Staff three days of COPE/climbing events
· Earn the Instructor Certification of Competency
· Standard First Aid or higher and CPR training is strongly recommended.
