Day One

Awesome first day! Woke 4 minutes before my 6:00 AM alarm, in Portland.

Breakfast of champions

The Portland airport was efficient: good systems, clear instructions, friendly people. My flight to LAX left early and arrived earlier.

The bike and luggage got to baggage claim before I did, undamaged.

Nephew Jens and his wife Brooke picked me up, I reassembled the bike in a nice park in Santa Monica, and got my launch swim in the Pacific Ocean under sunny skies. Then a tailwind picked up!

LA drivers are attentive and move fast. I rode predictably, and quick,  and in return they were courteous and patient. But inattentive or slow drivers got the horn, fast. The bike lanes are clean and well marked. Did I mention the tailwind?

With all of today’s travel, and so much that could have gone wrong (but didn’t), I planned a short ride day of 24.5 miles from the Santa Monica Pier to Jens’ home in Eagle Rock. So here I am, already 0.77% done. Only 99.23% to go!

I’d love to hear from you. Donate to the ride and send along your words of encouragement and tell me why getting kids outside matters to you.
